The r/place timelapse shows that this used to be Mexican territory, although heavily contested by its neighbors. After the Black Void blew over attempts were made to remexicanize this patch, but there were quite a few other competitors to deal with. The pink square, for example, was clearly out of Mexican hands. It used to be some kind of taco topped by a green jalapeno and a red one.
